The Illiad Paper


            In Homer's The Iliad honor played a very large role in the way in which a character acts and is treated. In the first 6 chapters of the book the reader is already shown which characters will be honorable and dishonorable. Hektor is the most honorable man thus far in the story. He represented and symbolized everything good for the home and in everyday family life. He is a good father, husband and son and you see this factor when he defends his father's city. He shows his true honor to his country when he fights in battle. Hektor is the only one who fights for military purposes as opposed to the extra selfish reasons in the motives the other two characters posses. .
             In Homer's The Iliad honor played a very large role in the way in which a character acts and is treated. In the first 6 chapters of the book the reader is already shown which characters will be honorable and dishonorable. The powerful Achilleus is also a very honorable character. Achilleus shows good family qualities as exemplified in the close ties to his mother, which is demonstrated when she visits Achilleus to tell him to fight in battle. Achilleus also shows honor in that he tries to convince Agamemnon to return Chryseis back to her father in order to stop the plague from destroying his people. This shows how Achilleus cares for his people and only wants the best for them. However, Achilleus is selfish in that he fights for himself. He fights for what he thinks is a good cause, namely to secure revenge. Achilleus" selfish ways do not prove him to be very honorable, but his kindhearted motives compensate his honor.

In the first 6 chapters of the book the reader is already shown which characters will be honorable and dishonorable. Agamemnon is a character who proves to be honorable at times as well. Like the other warriors, Agamemnon shows honor in battle.
