I read the book Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. The main character is Frank himself. He tells his life story starting from when he was born in America. Frank is a very loving person. His family was an important part of his life, especially his little brothers. When no one was there to watch them, Frank took responsibility and fed his little brothers, and this was when he was only about seven years old.
Frank went through many changes throughout his life. When he was young he and his family moved to Limerick where many of his other relatives lived. Since his family always lived in poverty, there were many obstacles he had to face. He reached time when he and his family were discriminated against because of their class. I believe that the poverty within his family also made him a better man. All of the time, he thought about what it would be like if everyone in his family would someday have nice clothes, lots of food, and a good home. This encouraged him to get jobs at a young age to help support his family. He sometimes spent his job wages on his little brothers. Towards then end of the story, Frank started to save up money in hopes that he would on day have enough to go back to America.
There were quite a few conflicts in this book. One problem that occurred throughout the whole book was that Frank's father, Malachy, had a drinking problem. He drank all of his wages, came home with nothing left, and sang songs, while making his young boys promise to die for Ireland. Everyone hoped that one day Malachy might come home with some money. .
The day finally came when Frank's little sister Margaret was born. She changed Malachy so much because up until then he only had his four boys, and now he had a little baby girl. Every week he came home with all of his wages and never drank one drop. One day Margaret died. Malachy became devastated and went back to his drinking while Angela suffered from depression.
The quote sets the tone for the whole book. ... Her older sister, Angela, was a writer and her younger sister, Jeane, was a painter. ... Upon their return to Manderley, all that remains of the once grand estate full of history is ashes. ... It's no doubt that this book is genius. ... I would say this book is worth reading. ...
