Dances with Wolves cultural analysis


            Many portray history differently, whether it's because of bias references or because history is modified to fit our times and expectations. Film producers usually produce movies that are based on historical periods so viewers can relate to it better. However, producers will typically change these events and modify the characters to make a more touching and inspiring film. A summary must be written on a film followed by a discussion of its historical accuracy and whether or not it was good to note how the historical modifications help. "Dances With Wolves" was based on a historical period with some modifications and it proved to be interesting. .
             It's important to have read a summary of the film so one understands why it was intriguing. The film starts out with Lieutenant Dunbar alone in his worn down fort writing in his journal. He notes about his friends, the Indians, and how their cultural interests him. This sets the plot for the whole movie. Lieutenant Dunbar goes to meet the Sioux, his Indian friends, who see him playing with a wolf and his friends name him "Dances With Wolves". The Sioux get a warning of attack from another tribe who attempts to raid the Sioux village. Dances With Wolves goes and gets each man a gun and they destroy the tribe and it's leader with only one Sioux life lost, Stone Calf. Dances With Wolves proves himself to the medicine man, Kicking Bird, who then gives him permission to marry the other white women who has lived with the tribe named Stands With Fist In Air. Dances With Wolves and Kicking Bird go on a ride to a white hunter's cabin where they see garbage and animal carcasses lying about. Dances With Wolves is so angered that he tells Kicking Bird that the white man won't stop coming. This is told to Chief Tens Bear who says that the most stay and fight, however they will relocate for the winter. Dances With Wolves goes back to his fort to get his journal where he finds that others have come and they seize him.
