The Lottery

The image of these women wearing sweaters shows their physical weakness and their inner fears which would cause them to shiver even on such a warm day. Moreover, the fragment "Women came shortly after their men folk" shows that they were meant to be suppressed by the male dominance.
The male and female authority is further distinguished by showing how children listen to their fathers" orders, but not their mothers": "Bobby martin ducked under his mother's grasping hand and ran, laughing, back to the pile of stones. His father spoke up sharply and Bobby came quickly and took his place between his father and his oldest brother"(29). The male dominance in the village is moreover emphasized in the scene where Janey approaches the black box to pick the ticket on behalf of her husband, Mr. Clyde Dunbar. Janey was stopped by Mr. Summers and asked whether there was a grown up boy to draw the lottery or not. This depicts that the women weren't even given as much consideration as their grown-up sons. Thus, the existence of women as an enity in itself ceased to exist. Their status was reduced tomere puppets in the hands of "men".
The image of the common women in the village is thus shown by the writer in the form of a living example to put a strong and rigid emphasis on the concept of women being suppressed. This living example is called Tessie Hutchinson. She is the wife of Bill Hutchinson and the mother of three children. The writer expresses her innocence when she says that Tessie came to the square through the crowd and told Mrs. Delacroix what day it was, when it was such an important day. Moreover, when Tessie looked out of the window before coming, she saw that the kids were gone and it was then that she realized it was lottery day. The absence of her husband made her think that her old man was out stacking wood. This shows that neither the children nor her husband thought of going together as a family but didn't even bother to inform Tessie about the event which was supposed to affect her drastically in the near future.
