Chronicle of a Death Foretold - Gabriel Garcí Márquez.
From reading the first two chapters of this novel it is quite clear to see that there is not merely one or two persons to blame for the killing of Santiago Nasar. I feel there is culpability on the whole town as many people play a part in Santiago Nasar's death.
The first suggestion that Santiago is going to be killed is the very first sentence of the novel, On the day they were going to kill him ' The word they' suggests to us, the readers, that not simply one person will kill him but several. This is a clever technique used so the reader continues reading to find out how and why this event will occur. .
There are several motifs leading up to Santiago Nasar's death building up the tension to make sure the reader reads on to find out what happens, until he was carved up like a pig ', the moment of misfortune ' and mastery of high flying birds of prey ' .
We are quickly introduced to Victoria Guzmán and Divina Flor, mother and daughter, who are particularly responsible for Santiago's death, both knew he was going to be killed ', but neither of them were certain of the rumour. Divina also later confesses that the reason she didn't tell Santiago was because she truly just wanted him dead. Another incident in development to this point is when Santiago leaves by the front door to greet the bishop, followed by Divina who closes the door after him, fails to spot a letter on the floor that, revealed the place, the motive, and other quite precise details of the plot. .
The most obvious people to blame are the twins, Pedro and Pablo Vicario. We are told there were two men who were waiting for Santiago Nasar in order to kill him' and they were clutching knives wrapped in newspapers to their chests. Even though they were the two who committed the crime there are still several people to blame also for the killing.
