GCSE Drama, Paper 1, Unit 1, The Evaluative Phase

This piece of coursework is led on from the Development Phase. We were told to describe our performance towards the play "Unwanted Girl" which we have devised from the idea of Chinese Cinderella. I think we did a fantastic job although there were many things we could have improved on. This did not matter much as we only had three hours to devise this play. We performed our play a day late because the person who played the narrator was not in school. This gave us some difficulty since the narrator has an important role in this play.
I think the best part of our play was the acting skills. All the characters were very well chosen since we had a variety of actors whom each had different skills. Everybody acted the way that they should have even though there was some sort of confusion in the middle of the play while we were trying switching scenes. The tape playing as the little girl's voice while she was reading or writing the letter was very effective because it was something different from what the other groups had done and because it looked extremely clever the way it is mimicked. It was good that the play gave the audience an idea of why the girl was being mistreated and how the boy was treated superior to the girl even though she is better at everything else. It is clear that the audience understands this when the father treats the mother the same way. This shows that it is not just the girl that is mistreated but the mother as well stating that all the women are treated badly because they are said to be "unwise" and are not to be trusted.
Despite our good moments, we made many mistakes and there were many things we could have improved upon had we had more time to work on our performance. We concentrated on the play and the scenes more than the technical issues which is why the lighting and the sound did not seem to work as well as we had hoped. The tape was extremely muffled, as it was something we rushed at the last minute.
