Story Tellers Shape Our perscpective of People and Events

In stories the storytellers shape our perceptions of people and events. This is done in an entertaining and yet effective way by manipulating images using a variety of powerful audio and visual techniques. This is clearly shown in the "Truman show" directed by Peter Weir and Damian Morgan's presentation "Have a Go". Both of these stories have their own meanings and messages.
In the "Truman show", characters are shaped according to the taste of the director Peter Weir. Our perception of Christof is shaped during the interview on "Tru talk". Christof is characterised through visual metaphor as being God. The lighting used in the studio is dark and gloomy creating an image of Christof and the rest of the crew as being sinister. When we first see Christof, we do not get to see he's full face. It is half hidden to suggest that his character has something to hide and therefore the audience cannot trust him. Camera close ups on Christof's face allows the audience to see his motives to make a judgement of his character. His character however is shown to be ambiguous as his tone in speech changes in the movie from being assertive in the interview to being soft and persuasive when he spoke to Truman. This supports Peter Weir's story as he tries to show the negativity of media. .
Peter Weir uses visual and audio techniques to shape events which tells the story. The reunion between Truman and his father represents an event often seen in soap operas. Maximum emotional appeal to the audience is obtained by the clever choice of music, camera effects and lighting. Christof is shown to be the controller of these effects. He chooses to play a slow piano tune to accompany the close up zoom on the face of Truman showing his tears. Low lighting allows the contrast between Truman's emotional face and the dark background. This emphasises Truman's heartache and happiness. This scene switches several times from the bridge where Truman and his father stood to the control room in the synthetic moon.
