On the way out they noticed Miss Emily's figure standing motionless in the window like an "idol". The smell went away after a couple weeks. After her father died, women from the neighborhood came to visit her and she would greet them at the door saying that her father wasn't dead. She kept saying this for about 3 days, meanwhile doctors and ministers tried to convince her to get rid of her father's body. Before they had to use the law, she "broke down" and they were able to bury her father. The town didn't think of her as crazy because her father protected her from many young men and she wouldn't be able to protect herself from people. .
Miss Emily became sick for a while, and when the town first saw her after some time she looked "sort of tragic and serene". A construction company came to town for the paving of sidewalks with the company came Homer Baron, a foreman, who became very popular in the town. He was caught being with Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons taking a drive around the town in a yellow-wheeled buggy. The people in the town were happy for her but they seemed kind of jealous of her. They said, "Of course a Grieson would not think that of a Northerner, a day laborer." They started saying "poor Emily" because they felt that it wasn't going to work out with Mr. Baron, and Miss Emily was going to be alone again. Miss Emily went to the drugstore and purchased some arsenic, not telling the druggist what it is going to be used for, which made the townspeople think that she was going to kill herself (mostly because arsenic is way too strong to kill rats).
