Catcher in the Rye

" Yet his swearing is so common in the novel, it is almost habit. His swearing is so habitual that he is unaware of how bad his language is. An example of this is only a paragraph down from Holden complaining about foul language when he says "feel so damn dizzy." .
The only person that Holden seems to really listen to and see as "true" and not phony is his sister, Phoebe. She even has to tell him a couple times about his swearing and he does not change. That is how habitual it is to him. .
Holden contradicts himself a lot in the book. He puts out this sex craved persona, yet when he has the chance, he falters. Holden meets a pimp on an elevator up to his room. The pimp talks him into renting a prostitute for a little "throw." Holden goes up to the room and he cleans himself up as though it were a real date. He even put on a new shirt. All throughout the novel, Holden provides examples of how sex craved he is. Then when it comes to this point, he admits that he is a virgin. He talks about how when a girl tells him to stop he stops even though they could mean it or not. Holden then goes on to make a deal about how young she looks and acts. Never once did Holden mention that he is only seventeen. He telks to the woman with a more dignified, suave approach. He is trying to act older than he is again. She says "Like fun you are," when Holden tells her that he is twenty-two. He finds this to be amusing. "It was a funny thing to say. It sounded like a real kid. You"d think a prostitute and all would say "Like hell you are" or "Cut the crap" instead of "Like fun you are."" Holden goes from calling her childish to admitting that he said a childish thing himself. He said "Don't you feel like talking for a while." Holden has a half-naked woman in is room who is going to give him sex and he is more than happy to stand up and hang her dress up for her. Holden eventually comes up with an excuse to get out of this situation.
