Students, when faced with a situation in which everybody does the same thing, react in a receptive and open way. This is they adopt behaviors that the group approves in order to be accepted. When you find a new group of friends and you start going out with them, they expect you to do the same things as them. An example of this is when you are at a party and you see that all your friends are drinking. You feel that if you drink with them you are going to be easily accepted. The other social or environmental reason why a student would drink has to do with peer pressure. According to Peter Miller, author of "Behavioral Treatment of Alcoholism", "Social interactions may also direct influence on alcohol consumption via group pressure and social modeling" (15). From this we can say that peer pressure has a major effect on people's behavior. For example, if a person spends a lot of time with a group of people that drinks, he is more than likely to adopt the behavior of the group. It is a well-known fact that friends exert a certain pressure on a person. This also applies to drinking. When at a party, a student is pressured to drink; he is going to do it out of the pressure and not personal acceptance. He is going to do it because he is told to. .
Secondly, I would like to talk about the social problems. There are three main problems that affect a student to the point of drinking. The first one is family problems. Family is an important part of a student's life. It has a major influence on the student and it is crucial for the student development. Many students have problems with their families and turn to alcoholism for comfort. An example can be when the parents get divorced. The student, besides having to deal with school and other problems, has to deal with the fact that their parents do not love each other.
