Consumerism


The end of the third stanza reflects a sexual theme "crunching in the after glow". However this image is produced not with romance and passion but with consumer products "they fell in love, and shared a Samboy" the use of food conveys to the audience the publics need to consume.
             The fourth conveys there B grade rushed romance. This is shown through them planning their future through commercials that are perhaps only three minutes long. The movie they are hesitant to watch is a B grade movie, this symbolises that their life will be uneventful as they find it difficult to embrace a trivial movie. The audience is again reminded of the fact that these individuals live through television, as they experience their first falling out over a TV program. "Their first falling out, took place over candid camera". Dawe adds irony to it by showing their argument on Candid Camera. The two reconcile their love again through a consumer product. "In by Cheezels." The final stanza symbolizes death and marriage both through television "to be ever faithful to each other", "till next they meet at world at war".
             Dawe's poetry shows his criticism by television shows as processes of life, he expresses this in a humorous way to show tease to consumerism. However, shows that are mentioned in the poem are by the influences of the USA, which is further shown in the poem "Americanized". .
             The title and word Americanized, shows the influence of America on everything including the author. The British and Australian style of spelling the word is americanised. This poem again is written in a conversational first person context. The use of alliteration "popping" and descriptive writing enable the audience to perceive a clear view of Dawe's perspective on consumerism, which again is negative. The poem expresses mothers over protective nature towards her child. The mother influences the child through her own belongings and her expectations of him.
