The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: Presidential Succession

Many people know that the Vice President will take the position of the President if the President dies, resigns, is removed from office, or is unable to perform his duties. Besides the Vice President, do you know who will be next in line to take over as President? This is why the United States came up with the Twenty-fifth Amendment. The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the Constitution is about presidential succession. .
In the late eighteenth century, many people wondered who would become President if neither the President nor the Vice President were able to serve their term. In January 1791, a House committee said the person next in line for President should be the cabinet member whose position was created first. The first cabinet position created was Secretary of State. At that point in time, Thomas Jefferson held the position of Secretary of State. The Federalists quickly objected to that proposal, because they did not like Thomas Jefferson and they did not want him to have a greater chance of becoming President of the United States. The Federalists also did not like him because he was an Antifederalist. Since the president pro tempore of the Senate succeeds the Vice President as leader of the Senate, people thought that the president pro tempore should also succeed the Vice President in line for the office of President. There were many people who were opposed to having the president pro tempore be second in line for the presidency. While the president pro tempore was President, he would still remain a senator. Because of this, people feared that there would be unbalanced powers between the legislative branch and the executive branch. Other people suggested that the Speaker of the House of Representatives or the Chief Justice should be second in line for the presidency. The Senate passed the Presidential Succession Act on February 20, 1792. It stated that the president pro tempore of the Senate would be first in the line of succession after the Vice President and would be followed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
