             Genetically Modified Foods offer many advantages. The world population is over 6 million people and predicted to double over the next 50 years. GM foods would help to ensure an adequate food supply to meet this population growth in many ways. First of all, crop losses from insects can be staggering, resulting in great financial loses for farmers and starvation in developing countries. People do not want to eat food that has been treated with pesticides because of potential health hazards, and run off from pesticides can poison water supplies causing harm to the environment. Growing GM foods like the B.t. corn can help eliminate chemical pesticides. Secondly, for some crops it is not cost effective to remove weeds by tilling, .

             so farmers spray large amounts of herbicides to destroy weeds. This is very time consuming because they must be careful not to harm the plant or the environment. Plants can be genetically engineered to be resistant to herbicides and this would prevent environmental damage by reducing the amount of weed killer needed. An antifreeze gene from cold-water fish has been introduced into plants such as tobacco and potato enabling these plants to tolerate cold temperatures that would normally kill sensitive seedlings. Also, as the world population grows farmers will be forced to grow foods in places that are not suitable for plant cultivation. Genetically modified plants would be able to withstand long periods of drought so people could grow plants in different places. Good nutrition is a major problem in third world countries where people rely on a single crop such as rice for the main staple of their diet.
