Canada at the turn of the century was, or was not a "Golden

During the turn of the century Canada was going through many changes that affected this country in many ways. It was not a "golden age of prosperity," because there was a lot of discrimination towards new emigrants and there were many poor working conditions.
From the turn of the century and right through the nineteenth century there was a lot of discrimination towards people because of there race, gender, and culture. Because of some people's skin colour and gender it affected the way they were treated. For instance, if you migrated from China, and were looking for a job, there would not be many jobs opportunities out there for you that would be safe. Many minority groups were often given jobs that were extremely dangerous and they would be at a high risk of getting injured or killed. Jobs like working in mines which caused many health problems because of the toxic fumes and coal dust in the air. Working on the construction of new railways was given to immigrants because it was a very hazardous job and in some cases lives were lost. The lives of immigrants were seen as expandable. .
Many immigrants and lower class people no matter what race they were involved in inhumane working conditions. It's been recorded that hundreds people most of them Chinese and African Americans had the highest death rate in all of Canada, this was a sad period in Canada's history and should not go unnoticed. An article from the early 1900's stated that "40 people died in an explosion due to poor handling of nitroglycerin," There was very little laws and regulations to protect the worker. Others died because they worked in inhumane conditions and long hours. Some of the people could not read or write English. A number of the people working were children, which were taken out of school to work in mines and factories. Many working women and children were paid unfairly and some times not paid at all; this is a very sad record on the development of Canada.
