Singing in The Rain

            The movie "Singing In The Rain" was a great example of why most of the earlier films were musicals. It showed that movies back then when they were first made had many things (that today we take for granted) wrong with it. An example of one of the difficulties they showed in singing in the rain was when Mr. Simpson was making his first movie with sound. The lead actress Lena had a scene with the lead actor Don where Lena couldn't get all of her dialogue into the microphone that was secretly hidden in the bushes next to her. The reason she couldn't do that was mainly because she wasn't that bright which the director had a hard time dealing with , but also she wasn't used to working in films with sound in them and trying to get a microphone to catch her dialogue. She was used to working in films where all she had to do was make facial expressions and not worry about talking. Another problem they had was their technology wasn't that great back then. In singing in the rain they showed that problem in the movie they made when they showed it to the audience their voices weren't in synchronization with what was being said on screen which the audience laughed at, and when that happened they knew that what they were doing wasn't going to work. Due to these two major problems they decided to make a musical. In the musical they for one didn't have to use Lena's voice which was terrible, and used Kathy's voice instead. They also knew by doing a musical that they would provide more entertainment to the audience rather than have them watch a movie with no action. Instead they would have people moving around dancing, singing, smiling, and joking unlike the movie they made before where there was no entertainment this movie would give the audience something that would entertain them which it did. By figuring this out Don and Kathy took the idea and ran with it by making the next musical in which Kathy stared in which was "Singing In The Rain.
