Is Street Crime More Harmful Than White Collar Crime

Is street crime more harmful than white collar crime? To answer this question we must first understand what a crime is. Henslin defines crime as the violation of norms that are written into law. Anyone who disobeys the law commits a crime. Be it running a red light or prostitution, one has committed a crime.
What do you think of when the word crime is spoken? Do you picture a man in a three piece suit, who has been skimming a little off the top, and smoking Cuban cigars, or do you see the inner city thug who has just murdered a rival gang member? Both men are criminals, but which one's actions are more detrimental to you?.
Street crime is far more dangerous than white collar crime. It is rare that you turn on the news and not hear a single story about a murder, rape, or some other kind of deviant behavior. Violent crimes are happening every day making our streets dangerous to walk on. College campuses around the county have emergency call boxes scattered all over campus in the event of an attack, help can be quickly summoned. Also, in inner city hotels, a cord is installed in every shower that calls for police help in the event of an attack. .
Society lives in fear of violent street crime. People must put bars on their windows and alarms in their houses and cars. Some don't even feel safe without a gun. In the inner city most stores don't even stay open past dark. Or if they do, the clerk is behind bulletproof glass. You never hear of anyone being afraid to go into their office because someone in their company might be embezzling or cheating on their taxes. .
We don't discredit the fact that white collar crime isn't dangerous. The government states that over 6000 people die a year from fatal work injuries (Henslin, 228). This may seem like a very high number, but think about this: Guns alone kill over 11,000 Americans every year (Bowling for Columbine). Just from watching Law and Order you know that there are many other ways to murder someone, strangulation, poisonings, stabbing, etc.
