Abortion - Ethics

The mother is given chemicals that induce labor and she delivers the premature fetus. .
Many pro-lifers often hold fervent, emotional stands against abortion. They sometimes even act out violently against it, for instance, there have been many cases where anti-abortionists would burn down abortion clinics. While the Catholic Church does not take such radical views on the issue, and it certainly does not advocate violence, it does stand firmly against abortion. The Church has been pro-life for hundreds of years, and, quite possibly, it may never change its stance. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception." Essentially, what the Church is saying is that humans, even frome the moment of conception, posess inviolable life. Each fetus is unique- genetically different from any other person- and deserves the respect and dignity of any other human. Even embryos, it says, must be recognized as having the rights of a person. .
In fact, most pro-lifers advocate this same principle, whether they are Catholic or not. One of the only acceptable situations for abortion would be if the pregnancy endangered the mother's life. In fact, performing a prenatal diagnosis with the intent to find abnormalities in the child isn't even morally acceptable. The Church teaches that abortion is an attack on life itself, the most fundamental human good. Abortion activists are committed against those who are the poorest and the weakest. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that the human being is entitled to the right to life in every phase of development, from conception to natural death, whether healthy or sick, handicapped, or rich or poor. The conference went further to state that, "All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion or euthanasia, strike at the foundations of the House of God.
