Povery in America

            
             There are many reasons that poverty plays an active roll in today's society. It is part of everyday life and affects almost everyone. Social workers have been trying to help these people for many years now, but only with limited success because the poverty rate keeps climbing and there is not enough help available to give everyone personal treatment. This is the major reason why I have chosen Social Work as a career to pursue.
             In order to interpret the causes of poverty in America, we must first understand how poverty is defined. I believe it is the lack of wealth and valuables, but also the mind state of being poor. For instance, your attitude toward being poor and how you behave and treat people plays an important roll in the definition of poverty.
             Now I believe that the causes of poverty are mostly based on your environment where you were raised or currently living in. I grew up in inner city Philadelphia, and have seen almost every thing. Growing up in a bad neighborhood gives you the temptation to make many bad decisions regarding your education, like choosing not to go because your friends don't. Starting your own family unexpectantly can also lead to poverty. How can someone raise a child when they can barely raise themselves? I would also have to say that besides your environment, poverty is also created by being seen as unattractive. As sorry as it sounds, I believe there is a lot of truth to that statement. Think about how many times you have made bias decisions regarding attractiveness. If two people were equally qualified for a job, which one would you chose. Most likely you would choose the attractive one, which leads the other candidate to pursue another job with out a pay check to live on. Race can also be an issue in the same situation. .
             How Social Workers help is a very touchy subject. Many people believe that individual personalized approach to working with the needy.
