Mayday

            
             Mayday originated as a festival for celebrating the first spring planting. The name Mayday would derive from the ancient Celts and Saxons God Beltane which means the day of fire. Mayday celebration would take on many different roles throughout history, but today as we know it as being a celebration of labor rights. The celebration of Mayday being a working class holiday evolved from the struggle of eight-hour working days. On May 1,1884 the Federation of Organized Trade and Labor Unions would pass a resolution that would constitute eight-hours being a legal day of work. In 1886 in on the eve of Mayday thousands of workers would take to the streets of Chicago and strike. Police would come in and break up the strike, during the disperse of the strike police would had killed four protesters and wounding many others. As word got around many activist called for the workers to take up arms and stand up for themselves. The worse incident was that someone had thrown a bomb into the on coming officers killing one and injuring seventy. Mayday would become dormant across the world, it became to be known as day to hear great speeches, and being apart of very small movements which had little effect. In 1998 Mayday would start to be revived with a group of activist coming together in Bradford to re-open new dialogues. The year of 2000 after inspired by the meeting in Bradford one of the biggest and well organized Maydays would be held in London. The four day long protest would hit every major sector of the business. There goal was to show there power through number and becoming one voice. They would shut down the main downtown area of London causing the local economy 20 million dollars. .
