The Philosophies of Mr. Blue

In Myles Connolly's character sketch, Mr. Blue, Connolly shows his own beliefs of life as Mr. Blue's philosophy is stated as follows: Joy is possible even in times of great suffering; Poverty is a blessing; The common man is noble. These beliefs of Blue helped him to realize that man is on earth, not for himself, but for others and God. When the times are tough or when people are sad, Blue helps to make things better. To be like Christ, he gives what he has to others in need. Giving to and helping others makes Blue a common man. A common man helping the common good.
Joy is possible even in times of great suffering. The Cure of Ars once said, "The cross is the gift God gives his friends." Blue longs for Heaven. So, in order to gain it, he accepts the crosses he has been given. Helping others makes him happy. So he gives away his money and possessions to the needy. Doing sacrifices for the good of others is worth it if the prize is Heaven. Blue, being sick in the hospital, still has high spirits, for he makes friends, laughs, and is happy in the company of others. Being with others gives him joy.
Poverty is a blessing from God. In the beginning of Mr. Blue, we see that he is rich. Blue, knowing that the people in the factories are common and/or poor, attaches all his money to various balloons and sets them afloat toward the factory. He says that money has worth and that it makes people happy. That must have been his reason for setting the balloons adrift. To be like Christ and to get to Heaven is all that he wants from life. Like Christ, Blue pledges himself to poverty by giving his things away to the poor. He gives away his attic room to live among the poor people and to sleep on floors. He was sent many crosses by God such that in the rain, he did not even have a coat or a pair of boots to wear. Despite the poverty, he was happy to be doing God's will.
The common man is a noble man.
