The Birds


             Since Horse undergoes severe changes through the course of the story he would be classified as a dynamic character.
             The white man from Boston headed west to seek a future. A tribal group of Native Americans make him their captive. Naked and barefoot the white man is treated like a horse by the tribe. At the tribe's camp he is pulled around by a rawhide thong. He is given food and fights for it like a dog. The white man realizes that he is better off acting like a horse. Meeting his owner, Greasy Hands, a grumpy old women Horse responds to her as if she was a witch. With the appearance of being burnt from the sun, Horse, is in much pain. Horse thinks of escaping but realizes that the tribe will just kill him. With this thought, he has the goal of winning the tribes respect. In the Crow language he proclaims, "My name is Horse", showing that he will not be treated like a dog. Horse learns the Crow language, but does not forget his own language. Horse was lonely and wanted to win a woman in the tribe named Pretty Calf as a wife. Taking action, Horse kills a member of the enemy tribe and takes his horses. Now being seen as a brave man he marries Pretty Calf. Horse and Pretty Calf become more attached to each other. Giving birth to Horses son, Pretty Calf and his son die. Mourning in sadness, he becomes closer to Greasy Hands and Horse slashes his arm like hers. .
             Leaving the tribe, Horse heads back home to his family. When Horse gets back home he does not boast, because he was equal of any man on earth.
