Robber Barons

A topic that includes anything that has to do with a robber baron is usually a very controversial topic because of what a robber baron is. It's a term applied to certain leading American businessmen of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including Cornelius Vanderbilt and John D. Rockefeller. The term suggests that they acquired their wealth by means more often foul than fair. They often performed this foul play in the stock market and in other types of business transactions . At the time robber barons made the economy a very unfair playing field for all. .
When Stanford University vetoed the robber baron as their mascot it raised a lot of questions. Is it appropriate to have a robber baron as a mascot? In my opinion, NO! If you think about other college mascots such as Seminoles, Buckeyes, Saints, Tigers, etc they are not things that portray dishonesty and disloyalty. Some of these mascots may portray aggressiveness and intimidation but they do it in a fun respectful way. In my opinion a school that has the reputation of Stanford should not risk possibly having a mascot that could hurt their image.
Robber barons were the elite of the elite in their time in the economy. A lot of historians have their own personal opinions on whether or not they were honest people or not. But that is not the point. The fact that they have the reputation of possibly being dishonest people is what makes the name a bad idea for the mascot of a very prestigious University. In my opinion the decision to veto the robber barons as a mascot and go with the cardinals was a very good decision.
