There are many different variety of institutions in today's society to rehabilitate juvenile delinquents.One such method in rehabilitating juvenile delinquents is shown to us through the prescribed text, Raw, written by Scott Monk. This novel shows us how a young offender is sent to a place called The Farm, and how he went through the rehabilitation process successfully. 'Sleepers' on the other hand, a movie produced by Barry Levinson, shows us how some institutions that house juvenile delinquents are not as effective. Well whats a institution, an institution is an organisation that is set up which has a special purpose. Its a place that you go/are sent to where people who have similar needs as you go. It might be the person's choice to be there, or they may be there because they were sent there.
In both Raw and 'Sleepers', the same institution is being dealt with. They both deal with juvenile detention centers. They are correctional facilities where youths who are, or who have been, in trouble with the law are sent for a period of time to serve punishment and to be rehabilitated so that they do not commit a crime again. In the Book Raw the farm is emphasised to symbolise the institution, the farm is run by Mary and Sam- an elderly couple wanting to change young peoples lives.The farm holds approxiamately 100 imates which has no fences and patrols and is a country town of Mungindi in rural NSW. .
For Brett Dalton in Raw it was not what he had expected to see. He expected the bars; he expected the place to be roaming with Dobermans. But it wasn't. Brett's thoughts on the way to The Farm were ".had finally reached their destination - The Farm. It sounded like a real pushover. Just Old MacDonald and a couple of geese. It didn't have the same threatening name that other juvenile detention centers had.Brett initially thought ,he could bludge around at The Farm for a couple of months, then leave.
