A Cage of Butterflies, by Brian Caswell, is a scientific thriller. Dr Larsen starts an institute for kids who are geniuses, in order to study them. In the institute there is Gretel, a whiz at multi-dimensional mathematics, Mikki and Greg a crippled boy, who each have a huge general knowledge, Gordon and Lesley who have extraordinary memories, which allow them to play a game of chess against each other with out needing a chess board, Chris, an electronics expert, and Katie, a young 10 year old who has a strong thinking ability. .
Strange things start to happen in the Institute. Katie begins getting messages in her mind from children called Babies, a seven-year-old kid named Myriam and also Ian, Rachael, Pep and Ricky. They each have an IQ over 450. They ask Katie and her friends to protect them from Dr Larsen who has been investigating the Babies. The geniuses with Susan and Eric, two scientists who look after the kids, try and stop Dr Larsen before he unravels the mystery of the Babies. .
It was very easy to get interested in this book from the first chapter through the presentation of the character Greg. The story is about a group of kids who have very high IQs, and one is also disabled. Greg doesn't see his disability as a disadvantage, but uses it as an advantage. He is a very brave and courageous character. Greg and the others are in an institution run by scientists for children with amazing minds and IQs over 150. They are given tests to investigate just what they can do.
A group of extremely smart teenagers and even smarter children are all living at "the farm", an advanced learning centre. They have stumbled upon something that not even the leader of the learning and research centre can find a reason for. Some babies from a certain hospital have undergone a transformation, and no-one is saying anything. The children think that it is up to them to stop the project that has already killed eight and threatens more.
