Belle Epoque - Movie Review

Belle Epoque is an odd, off-beat movie where Fernando, the soldier, is seduced by Manolo's four young and beautiful daughters. After sleeping with each one, Fernando automatically falls in love and wants to be married to that daughter. The most comical scene in the movie is where Violeta, the most masculine daughter, dresses Fernando in a maid's outfit before going to a costume dance in order to seduce herself. In order to play the part of the man, Violeta wears Fernando's soldier uniform. Soon, she has her way with Fernando. The next morning, Fernando is so in love that he proposes to marry her, but she only used him. The youngest daughter, Luz, who is also the only virgin in the family, wants to be with Fernando, but she is his last choice of the women. Oddly enough, in Manolo's family, sex is not a very big issue. Fernando sees sex as a sacred joining of two lovers, unless, of course, the sex is between a man and a prostitute. Manolo's wife is constantly on tour around the world singing, and her manager is also her lover. Strangely, Manolo is fine with this, as long as he is able to sleep with her at least once a year. In the end, Fernando marries Luz and they move to America, the other three daughters return to their normal lives, Manolo's wife travels to America to sing and Manolo is left alone at home.
