Port Chester


            Knowing my father is the closest anyone has ever come to knowing a mad scientist. Ever since I can remember, he has supplied my family with all the modern necessities, except they were usually altered in some way. When you turn on the television, you need to put it on channel 11 for exactly 6 minutes and then you can turn it to whatever channel you want. When you use the microwave, you need to turn off this one, certain light in the den or else the microwave won't turn on. His theory is if you can find some way to get something to work, then it works. So, of course, when my sister and I got our driver licenses, we expected nothing different for our cars. I got a 1972 Mercedes. The car was $700 and had no engine for a good two years after we got it. My sister got some sort of 80s Subaru which just looked like a knock off Delorian. One windshield wiper was positioned in the middle of the front window, expected to clear the entire area. I"ll forget the sight of that one windshield wiper as it uncontrollably flopped about the front of the car in the middle of a rainstorm.
             My sister, Jenni, and I were on a road trip. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing in New York, and I was going to be there. I loved their lyrics, their melody, and their soul. Flea slapped out a bass line like nobody else and I was going to finally see it live in person. So we took the long trip from Boston to Connecticut, with only a slight snag in Newton where we got lost and went through the Newton toll plaza three times, but eventually we made it to my home and prepared for our next trip to New York the following day. .
             We had the trip all planned out. We"d leave at 5 o"clock, drive two hours to get there, have dinner, then rock the rest of the night. I was ready. We left right on time, and then, 45 minutes into our trip I looked in my pocket. Then I looked in my purse. Then I looked in my jacket. Then I realized I didn't have our tickets.
