Frankenstein

It is said that history repeats its self, and that has proven to be correct. Many issues addressed in Frankenstein are as relevant today as they were when the novel was written. There are the ramifications of alienation, the preoccupation of society with appearance, and the issue of parental responsibility, abuse, and neglect. These issues are just as important today as they were in those times.
First, there are the ramifications of alienation. The Creature is alienated by society. He wants people to accept and include him. He says he wants to, "Become linked to the chain of existence and events, from which I am now excluded," (108). His alienation from society causes him to hurt people, because he thinks they will never accept and like him. That is prominent in today's world. People who are "shunned" by society often have the tendency to act out. Their behavior reflects their longing for attention, friendship, and companionship. The Creature yearns for companionship. He exclaims, "Shall each man find a wife for his bosom, and each beast have his mate, and I be alone," (124). .
Then, there is the preoccupation of society with appearance. The Creature is ugly and deformed. Every person he meets is scared of him, and will not give him a chance. Although he is very articulate, no one is interested in anything he has to say because of his appearance. That is still true today. The society as a whole, especially Americans, is driven by appearance. Americans spend huge amounts of money each year on plastic surgery and diets. The Creature thinks that befriending a young boy will be wise, because he assumes that the boy will not be prejudiced and will befriend him. The Creature recalls, "As soon as he beheld my form, he placed his hands over his eyes and uttered a shrill scream," (103). People are being taught at very young ages to associate mainstream images as "pretty", and the images that are not as common as "ugly".
