Who Really Owns America?

After the fiasco over the fear regarding Dubai's handling security in American Ports, many pundits and the blogosphere began talking about the ownership of America. Some have claimed that the Chinese own enough of America to stage a hostile takeover. Others claim it's the Japanese. Still more, conspiracy theorists claim that the United States is a British corporation, an asset of the crown, or distinguish a legal difference between the United States and the United States of America. After Osama Bin Laden's claims that their Jihad against the United States could be won by bleeding our economy dry, average Americans began paying more attention to who owns the land and the businesses of our great nation. Most asking the question would be surprised to know that the answer is at best, Murky. .
The easy answer to the question "Who Really Owns America" is to say the United States Government owns America. Since the government owns the money, and charges a tax on income and gains, it would be easy to make a case for the fact that the government owns the land. That claim could be further bolstered by the legal rights given by imminent domain. If the government needs your land for the sake of the public good, they have the imminent right to take it, though in most cases they must also compensate you for it, paying fair value or better. That means, in essence that the rights of the United States government trump the rights of foreign investors wherein land and buildings are concerned. Furthermore, as the grantor of public license, the government also has the right to revoke said license, meaning that the rights of the United States Government also trump the rights of foreign investors. .
While the answer of Ownership is easily answered by stipulating the rights of the Federal Government, it is also made murky by the acknowledgment of those rights. How do we define the Federal government? Who is the government? Furthermore, our money that is supposedly owned by the government is actually backed by private enterprise as the Federal Reserve is privately owned, and not a subsidiary of the United States.
