Chilean Miners to be Rescued after Two Months Underground

33 Chilean miners are anticipating a long-awaited for rescue after being trapped in a mine for two months. Miners have been trapped since August 5th when an access tunnel caved in at Cia. Minera San Esteban Primera SA's San Jose copper and gold mine (Crooks). Miners were found alive just one week ago, on October 4th (Ide). .
The miners range from age 19 to 63. All are reported to be in "good shape" physically and psychologically. After living in humid conditions for more than two months, many are facing skin problems. Others are taking antibiotics to fend off dental infections. Ten of the miners are undergoing examinations and receiving special treatment (Crooks).
Because of their conditions, the miners have been split into three groups for rescue. The "most skilled" will be freed first in case they are needed to go back down to assist others. The weakest will come out in the second group, and the third group will consist of the rest. The Chilean Minister of Health, Jaime Manalich, told reporters, "They were fighting with us yesterday because everyone wanted to be at the end of the line, not the beginning. I spoke to them to tell them that we needed to establish an order of evacuation, and that the order would be decided together with them and with the technical team, and what was their reaction? 'Yes, minister, that's all fine and well, but I want to leave last.' And then another one shows up and says, 'No, comrade, I had said that I would go last,'" Manalich told reporters at a news conference Sunday. "I tell this story to show what a complete and admirable spirit of solidarity they have kept" (Gay). .
The longest mine rescue ever will begin its final stage on Wednesday. Miners will travel through the Phoenix, a thin steel tube. The men will be pulled out one by one, to travel the 90 minutes to the surface. All in all, it will take two days to extract all the men (Crooks).
