Boyfriend, Nick MGuffin, Suspected in Leah Freeman's Murder

The case regarding Leah Freeman's murder is being reopened after sitting cold for nearly ten years. On June 28, 2000, Freeman left her friend, Sherri Mitchell's, house after getting into an argument. Her boyfriend, Nicholas McGuffin, had dropped her off previously and was expected to pick her up later. After the argument, Freeman chose not to wait for her ride and instead decided to walk home but never made it (CBS News). On August 3, 2000, her body was found in a wooded area about eight miles from her hometown of Coquille. The autopsy revealed that she had died from "homicidal violence." The only piece of evidence found was a single tennis shoe found on a sidewalk (Lohr). Without enough evidence, the case grew cold. .
Because Freeman was supposed to meet up with McGuffin that night, police questioned him and received a search warrant to search his car and house. They found that McGuffin had removed the trunk liner from his car, although his father protested that he had removed the liner because of a fuel leak. Neighbors also reported that a bonfire was held at the McGuffin household the day after Freeman disappeared (Lohr). .
In October of 2009, Freeman's mother, Cory Courtright, requested that the Coquille Police Department and the district attorney's office reinvestigate the case. "They need to have a dedicated team go back and look through all of the files again, re-interview everyone involved, and re-examine all of the evidence," she said. In January, a cold-case team was formed. Although the authorities refuse to release what new evidence they have found, they have brought murder charges against Freeman's then-boyfriend, McGuffin. "We've examined the evidence with new technologies now available to us, and certain witnesses, due to maturity and time, have been able to come forward and provide more information about that night," said Coquille Police Chief, Mark Dannels (Lohr).
