Controversial Death of Army Private David Jones


            Army Private David Jones was found dead in his barracks in Iraq with a fatal gunshot to his head. While the army insists that his death was a suicide, his family firmly believes that Jones would not have killed himself (Bailey).
             An Army liaison told Jones' family that his roommate entered the barracks mid-afternoon to find music blaring and a rifle beside Jones' body. An autopsy is yet to be performed (Grondahl). .
             With just 13 days left before he was scheduled to return home, his family said he had too much to live for (FOX23news.com). According to his family, he had recently purchased an engagement ring that he planned on giving his girlfriend in three weeks at the New York Giants football game (Bailey). "He sent Brittany an engagement ring, and gave it to her mother to hold on to. And he sent us tickets to the Dallas Cowboys and Giants game on November 8th and he was going to propose to her at half time," his mother, Theresa Bennett, explained. His brother Bernie Bennett also refuses to believe that Jones would have killed himself, considering he was making many plans for the future. "I talked to him the other day and he was going to be back for my birthday and we were going to celebrate together," Bernie said (FOX23news.com). .
             George Bennett, Jones' uncle, was first to be notified. After answering a knock at his door on Saturday, George was told that his nephew was found dead in his bunk by two US Army officials. Jones' family has said that the Army is being very brief and is hesitant to give them any details (Bailey). "They said that they found him in his room at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and there was one gunshot wound to his head. That was it. They didn't say anything about anything else," his mother recalls (FOX23news.com). She also reported, "We were told he was shot by one of those very long rifles and there's no way he could have done it himself. There's no way this was suicide" (Grondahl).
