Rowling Announces Pottermore Website to be Launched in October

Rowling, author and creator of the Harry Potter phenomenon, partnered with Sony to create Pottermore, an interactive website that will be available in October 2011. Despite the wide range of guesses from a massively multi-player online role-playing game to a treasure hunt to a sequel, the Pottermore website will allow Potter-crazed fans to journey through the story lines of the books, starting with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," according to a statement from Rowling's media team (Clark). .
"It's the same story with a few crucial additions, the most important of which is you," Rowling said in her announcement on YouTube that ran simultaneously with her news conference in London. "Just as the experiences of reading requires that the imaginations of the author and the reader work together to create the story, so Pottermore will be built, in part, by you, the reader. The digital generation will be able to enjoy a safe, unique online reading experience built around the Harry Potter books. Pottermore will be the place where fans of any age can share, participate in, and rediscover the stories" (Clark). .
Rowling even announced that the seven original Harry Potter books will be available as ebooks for the first time, in five languages and more to come, and as audiobooks in an online store on the website. Although rumors circulated that a sequel to series would be released, Rowling is sticking to her promise that the Harry Potter series ended with the seventh book. However, Rowling promising to release new content on the Pottermore website that she has been "hoarding for years" (Clark). .
Rod Henwood, CEO of Pottermore, reported that Rowling has already written at least 18,000 words of new material for the site, "which will grow and grow and grow." The additional information includes facts about the characters, back stories, games, interactive features, and a store (Adler).
