Movie Deconstruction: Funny Games

" The character in question, Paul (Michael Pitt) is in full control of the films outcome, even rewinding the events of the film with a remote control, when Anne, the mother in the family (Naomi Watts) manages to kill his accomplice Peter (Brady Corbet). It is the best and well known example of Haneke's film making, brutal, uncompromising with a thought provoking message.
The sequence which I am going to look at however is the opening scene at the beginning of the film, before anything happens, as I feel it foreshadows what is to come. The film opens with very small, hard to read, red credits on a plain pitch-black background. The text is in the center of the screen, in very thick bold and capital letters, but because the font size is very small we have to look closer at the screen to be able to read the credits for people involved in making the film. It almost feels like you're not supposed to read them, already giving the film some kind of uneasy feeling about what is going to happen. It is somewhat of a relief when we go from the text to a pleasant scene with an SUV driving down a motorway with a boat attached to it in broad daylight, where we hear classical music and the voices of the family on their way to their as yet unknown destination. We next find out that they are playing a guessing game, of what piece of music is playing, we see from a point-of-view camera angle, the stack of CD's that they have in their car. The fact that they are listening to this kind of respectable, sophisticated music suggests something about them as people and provides a stark contrast for the kind of people they are going to meet and what they are going to experience. .
The camera then frames the next shot of the three family members sat in the car faced towards us. George, the father (Tim Roth) correctly guesses that the composer is Handel but is unable to name the piece. He attempts to change the music but his wife stops him and asks him to listen.
