Aristocracy in Literature


In his era he was the poor persons hero.
             In "Candide", the novel ridicules a number of Enlightenment Period philosophies, it showed how the Enlightenment was nothing like a uniform movement. Candide's setting takes place during the Enlightenment Era; "The Enlightenment" is the name for a movement that encompasses a wide variety of ideas and advances in the fields of philosophy, science, and medicine. The main idea of "Enlightenment philosophy" is a profound faith in the power of reason and rational thought to lead human beings to a better social structure. The followers of the Enlightenment called for rebellion against superstition, fear, and prejudice. They attacked the aristocracy and the church. Candide reflects Voltaire's lifelong hatred towards Christian regimes of power and the arrogance of nobility. Voltaire strongly opposed certain Enlightenment ideas about social class. Some Enlightenment thinkers wanted to keep the enlightened monarch instead of changing the formation of society. The people of the enlightened monarch relied on the idea that rulers could use their power to ensure the protection of their subjects' rights. The monarch used their power to ensure this protection. Therefore, the name of the Enlightenment could be used to legitimize the monarch's authority. Candide illustrated this fact after the Lisbon earthquake when the Grand Inquisitor is ordered to ward off any more earthquakes. .
             Voltaire's view of the aristocrats was worse than his perception of the Church. He continually attacked many members of the bourgeois about their pride and conceit in their lineage. Voltaire's first example of aristocratic attitudes of pride occurs very early on in the book. (Page 19) Candide's origin is discussed, and it is stated that his mother and father did not marry because his father, "could only claim seventy-one quarterlings, the rest of his family tree having suffered from the ravages of time.
