Megan's Law according to the Columbia encyclopedia "is a state or federal statute that requires the notification of public organizations and private citizens when a convicted sex offender has been released from prison and is present in the community. Megan's Law was created after the 1994 rape and murder of seven year old Megan Kanka. Megan Kanka was a seven year old girl from New Jersey who was lured to the house of a twice convicted sex offender. He then brutally raped and murdered her and then left her body in a park nearby. Later that day a search party was formed to look for Megan and the man who committed this crime even offered to help look for her. He even eventually led the police to her body. The Kankas had no idea that a twice convicted sex offender was living right down the road. The mother of the girl stated that if she had known this man was living in their neighborhood she would never have let her daughter roam around alone. Megan's Law helps police in investigation, establishes grounds to hold known sex offenders, helps prevent offenders from re-offending, offers important information to the public.
