The Dolls House essay

In the short story, ˜The Doll's House', written by Katherine Mansfield, the main character in the story was Kezia Burnell.
Kezia was the main character in the doll's house as she is the one who is 'different' to the other girls at her school and as most of the events in the story are created by her actions or seem to involve her in some manner. In the story we get to see glimpses of Katherine Mansfield in Kezia as the story was set in Wellington where she used to live for a short period of time when she was young until she decided to move back to England. During this period of time, who you were to associate with was based on your social class. As this story was set in the early 1900's, the class system was still in place. When there are social classes, there are people who are treated poorly as a lack of wealth which your social class is based on. In the doll's house, these people are known as Lil and Our Else Kelvey. They are outcasts as they are the only two people included in the story with low social class, therefore they are treated badly as a result. "Is it true you're going to be a servant when you grow up Lil Kelvey? ". .
When the doll's house is introduced to people at school by the Burnell's, everyone suddenly wants to see it. Eventually everyone has seen it and Kezia asks her mum if she can show the Kelvey's as she feels bad for them as they are left out and wants to make a difference. "Mother", said Kezia, "can't I ask the Kelvey's just once'. Her mum obviously says no so she decides to be sneaky and quickly invites them around to take a quick peek but is quickly caught by Aunt Beryl as the little Kelvey's scamper away. This is why Kezia is the main character as through the process of the story we get to see the depth of her character which is shown by the way she treats the Kelvey's, unlike other characters who we get to see very little of. Her relationship with the Kelvey's is what makes her unique as she is the only one who had not treated the Kelvey's badly once and offered them to come and see the doll's house at her expense.
