Survival and Purpose in Life of Pi


" It is the way of devotion, the daily prayer and the physicality of it that attracts Pi. Furthermore, the readers see that Pi is attracted to all three for distinct reasons, all of which help him survive his ordeal on the boat. He sums it up himself beautifully, "Hindus, in their capacity for love are indeed hairless Christians, just as Muslims, in the way they see God in everything, are bearded Hindus, and Christians, in their devotion to God, are hat-wearing Muslims." (p. 50, Chapter 15).

             The author seems to want to offer the readers some hope of expectations as to how the next section turns out. Before the readers begin the third section of the novel, the author deliberately gives the readers a very clear imagery of the kind of life that Pi will have in the future, the after life of his profound experience has ended, the place where Pi's experience of being a survivor. In the other word, the author wants a separated section of the novel where the fictional writer of the story visits to Pi's house and meets him again. This makes the anticipation that the next section of the book will begin by narrating the disaster of Pi on his trip on the boat.
             The reason behind its spared life was revealed shortly. It froze my blood-and then brought a slight measure of relief. A head appeared beyond the end of the tarpaulin. It looked at me in a direct, frightened way. ducked under, appeared again, ducked under again, appeared once more, disappeared a last time. It was the bear-like, balding-looking head of a spotted hyena. Our zoo had a clan of six, two dominant females and four subordinate males. I recognized it by its right ear, which was badly torn, it healed jagged edge testimony to old violence. Now I understand why Richard Parker had not killed the zebra: he was no longer aboard. There couldn't be both a hyena and a tiger in such a small space.
