Baseball Hero Roberto Clemente

             Roberto Clemente was born in Barrio San Anton Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18,1934. (Beyond Baseball) He grew up in a humble home along with his six other siblings and his parents Melchor and Luisa Clemente. (Hispanic Biography) As he spent his early years working to help his family due to financial struggle, he took an interest in baseball and once he'd nearly perfected the game, he was recruited to play baseball when he was a teenager. .
             On December 31, 1972, on a mission to aid victims after an earthquake nearly decimated Nicaragua, Roberto died in a plane crash. (Markusen /World Biography)Today, Clemente is recognized as one of the greatest Latin-American professional baseball players of all time and more importantly, is known for his genuine acts of helping others. .
             One reason Roberto Clemente should be admired is because he was a talented athlete.
             As a young boy Roberto showed great athletic ability. While attending school he won several regional competitions in javelin throws. He also participated and in other events such as the high jump and the 400 meters. Roberto had several skills, but the best skill he had was his right arm because of his capability in throwing, hitting, and fielding during his games. Aside from being talented in sports when in his free time he wrote poetry, made ceramic figurines for his home, danced, and played musical instruments like the organ.( Markusen).
             A second reason Roberto Clemente should be admired is because of his selfless service. Roberto spent as much time as possible working with children. He would encourage them to get involved in sports, advise them about great citizenship, and teach them about importance of having respect for there elders.
