An Argument Against Longer School Days

A longer school day has no benefit if the children attending refuse to participate and learn any information from the extended classes. .
             Longer school days require more salaries for teachers, more supplies and more power usage. With all the added expenses the schools will have to present an increased tax plan or cut back on funding for other school functions. .
             The leisure industry which relies on family vacation travel, could take a major hit. "Fewer, vacation - days will dry up the industry's labor source and lead to huge losses of revenue for American hotels and resorts, " said Joe Mcinerney, President and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Summer camp businesses will also likely be destroyed if there is a cut in summer vacations. .
             There are parents today who are complaining that because of the longer school days they spend little time with their children. Many children have extracurricular activities after school which is now being extended further into the evening. With the continuation of such a cycle parents and children will become more upset, which will put a strain on the schools. There is slim evidence to support the facts that longer school days boost performance, where as there is much more substantive research demonstrating that after-school activities show improved academic results.
             The pros and cons of longer school days would be Benefit for parents who just want the kids out of their hair until time for bed but family time will be cut short. President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan have underscored the importance of more time in the classroom as a critical component of education reform. President Obama says kids in the U.S. spend too little time in the classroom, putting them at a disadvantage when competing with students in other countries. The president has suggested that making school days longer and extending the school year will increase learning, raise test scores, and close the achievement gap.
