Internationalization of Higher Education in Denmark

Denmark is well-known for its education system. This finely tuned program not only appeals to Danish students, but to international students as well. However, to ensure that Danish students will not fall behind in their studies, Denmark should be cautious when welcoming foreign students.
There are several reasons why internationalized education in Denmark may not be positive. According to Karen M. Lauridsen, university education in Denmark is becoming more internationalized. This is also an increased number of lessons being taught in English. However, higher international education requires a certain level of academic English and not every student has a complete understanding of the English language. These students might be completely suitable for international studies, but will have trouble completing their courses because they lack English skills. .
Also, international students in Denmark might not see any reason for learning Danish if everyone is speaking English. As a result they will not be integrated properly, which normally is required when moving to a foreign country. If Danish is not used in the universities at all, academic Danish might fade away and be forgotten, although every Dane needs to be able to speak proper Danish. .
Another thing to consider - the government should be careful not to favor international students over Danish students. Although foreign students grades are lowered when entering Denmark, a university might turn down a Danish student because a foreign student with a higher grade is given greater consideration. This will make the student application process even longer, something the Danish government tries to avoid. .
On the other hand, there are a number of benefits that come with more internationalized education in Denmark. According to Lauritsen, with an increasing number of international students, Denmark is rated in the international top five in regards to higher education, research and development.
