This quote is the last line of the story "Adventure," by Sherman Anderson, at a point where everything seems to be coming to an end. Alice is finally coming to realization that everything does not always go as planned. At the top of page 51, it is discussed how Ned Currie moved from Cleveland to Chicago and how he at first was very lonely. During the period of his loneliness he wrote Alice frequently but as he became accustomed to Chicago and making friends, specifically attractive female friends, he slowly forgot about Alice and no longer kept in contact with her. Although she was not a priority of Ned anymore, she still continued to hold on to the relationship and this represents her first sign of denial. She was in denial about the fact that she was not a preference or concern of Ned's any longer and that he forgot about her.
Also towards the bottom of page 51, there displays a point in the story where Alice is in denial but beginning to slowly face the truth. There is a line that states "When other young men tried to attract her attention she would have nothing to do with them. I am his wife and shall remain his wife whether he comes back or not, she whispered to herself." This is an important line because she is still in denial but at the same time coming into reality with herself. When she says "whether he comes back or not " this represents the next stage in her life where she is starting to notice the possibility of Ned not coming back to her.
