I've been following and reading publications distributed by the Triangle Coalition for over a year now. The Triangle Coalition is a group of organizations that came together in 1985 to form a national forum for the discussion of science, mathematics and technology education issues. The Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education was formed in order to provide an organizational structure for gathering resources and support for science and technology education. Since then, Triangle Coalition has expanded its efforts to include engineering education as well. Today, the Triangle Coalition is considered to be a national leader and advocate for the reform of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM education. .
With funding from The Carnegie Corporation of New York, the MacArthur Foundation, various government agencies (National Science Foundation, Department of Education, Department of Energy, and NASA), and Triangle Coalition members, the Coalition has administered and managed a large number of grants and programs. The Triangle Coalition has also coordinated major programs, including the Local Alliance Network Program; the National School Volunteer Project in Science, Mathematics, and Technology (NSVP); Scientific Work Experience Programs for Teachers (SWEPT); the Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Technical Assistance and Leadership Development Project; and the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program.
A driving force behind the coalition was Camsie McAdams, who now is the Senior Advisor on STEM Education, advising the U.S. Department of Education on P-20 STEM issues. What is P-20 you ask? Simply put, P-20, according to a P-20 primer published by Michigan's Children, is an increasingly popular educational concept that aligns "programming, funding and expectations from the earliest years ("P"reschool) of a child's development, through the K-12 system, and into and through post-secondary education and workforce participation.
