As a member of a Christian church and the United States Army, I feel as though people should not feel the need to express their opinionated hate towards others for various reasons. A good example of people expressing such feelings is the conflict with the Westboro Baptist church protest. Many members of the Westboro Baptist church feel a very strong opinion about homosexuals and decided they would demonstrate their strong feelings at the funerals of several fallen troops. These people give the Baptist community a bad name and personally, I feel as though we should love the sinner but hate the sin. .
People need to be pointed in the right way to turn from destruction. Everyone has their own struggles in life and everyone needs some guidance every once in a while. Some people use such a reason, to convince others, they are going in the wrong direction. Christ came to show us love and that he has come for us all. Picketing these soldiers who gave all for you to have your freedom is morally wrong, and from a Christian standpoint it is also wrong.
Everything we do in life is all a personal choice and something we decide on our own, we are each motivated by an urge to do what is either right, or wrong. Most of the time we can tell these two urges apart and know which one is right and which one is wrong. During the demonstration the Westboro Baptist church gave, each member there knew what he or she was doing and really affected everyone who was attending the funerals of these fallen troops. USA Today's article, "Does First Amendment Protect Protests at Military Funerals?" states, "Many landmark free-speech cases have involved repulsive messages, but it's hard to imagine a less sympathetic messenger than the Rev. Fred Phelps and his self-styled Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka. .
Phelps and his small band of followers assert that God is punishing the United States whether in disasters such as the 9/11 attacks or in the deaths of individual soldiers for its tolerance of homosexuality.
