Overview of Prison Security

The closed security facility is surrounded by double layered fencing with razor sharp wire and several guard towers scatter across the campus. Inmates can leave the cells to work or to get exercise in the yard. All of these physical aspects of the prison are designed to keep inmates secure in the prison while keeping the staff members safe. Through analyzing the physical structure any possible weaknesses can be uncovered and corrected. While the physical structure is essential to the detainment of the prisoner operational aspects of the prison are also extremely important. .
The next priority would involve conducting a complete analysis on the operational processes within the prison. This would include the procedures used to secure the prisoners as well as the effectiveness of the prison staff. This is also known as the internal security. Even if a prison has the most secure physical structure if the internal controls are not in place the prison will continue to experience breaches in security. Internal security measures involves a well trained staff, recognizing potential threats, access control, transporting prisoners, searching inmates, and securing the institution to keep prisoners in and to keep society out. The third priority is to review the effectiveness of individual's staff members as well as the effectiveness of the correctional team as a whole. Failures in security have led to the prison breaks and increased assault not only on the inmate but the correctional officer. In order to fix the problems at the prison an analysis will need to be conducted on the operational aspects of the prison. When inmate violence increases as well as the risk to the staff it is important to determine what aspects of the prison are responsible for failing to meet the security needs of the prison? .
The third priority is to develop better training measures for correctional staff. It is important to emphasize that the physical features of an institution's perimeter, by themselves, are useless without staff properly trained to be alert to their responsibilities while operating a post (2010).
