Case Study - 35 Year Old Man with an Anxiety Disorder


The patient did two tours overseas tours and one was in Iraq. The patient is a manager at a bank and from time to time he misses work to avoid the stress. Looking in the medical background the patient has been healthy all his life. He works out and doesn't consume any drugs or alcohol. According to the patient he has been experiencing unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches, chest pains and back pains. Due to the recent pains he rent to the ER and several test were ran but no diagnosis was determined. Along with the chest pains, headaches and back pains the patient has been having feelings of anxiousness and sacredness. The patient has been having a difficult time sleeping and has been having a difficult time controlling his anger. The outburst have been mostly towards his family his wife and children. The patient doesn't abuse alcohol or drugs, however when he was in his 20s he experimented. .
             2. What additional information is needed?.
             Information such as did the patient witness any traumatic experiences while on tour or even as a child. Does he have nightmares and what type of nightmares? How long have the symptoms been occurring is another piece of information that is needed? It also needs to be known if he has thought of the past traumatic events. It needs to be known if he suffers from any other mental illnesses. Also, it should be known if he is on any medication. .
             3. Based upon the factors listed, what is your diagnosis? .
             The patient is suffering an anxiety disorder. Due to the fact he has military background it can be suggested as post traumatic stress disorder. .
             There are 8 criterions that helped diagnosis the patient. The patient doesn't meet the entire criterion based upon the fact much of the information is not available in the case study description. .
             Criterion 1: Stressor - According to the DSM-V an individual who has experienced death, threatened death or threatened severe harm.
