Speech - Propaganda in the Digitial World

The first source to be considered is "Triumph of the Will" (1935), which was monumental in that it was one of the first observational documentaries. The propaganda within is the myth of resurrection of Germany to its ancient heroism through the medium of one man, Adolf Hitler, the saviour. Although continuously denied by the creator, Leni Riefenstahl- Triumph of the Will is a subtle Nazi propagandist film based on the developed ideology that "Hitler has come from the sky to kindle ancient Nuremberg with primal Teutonic fire, to liberate the energy and spirit of the German people through a dynamic new movement with roots deep in their racial consciousness" (Propaganda As Vision: Triumph of the Will, 2003). Within the film the use of the traditional propaganda technique "appeal to authority" is used significantly and critically with the citing of the prominent figure Hitler- their Fuhrer- as a means to support the course of action taken within the documentary. This technique of visually depicting Adolf Hitler throughout the entirety of the film was significantly effective at the time of this documentaries creation as Hitler was universally considered and idolised as 'the genius of the German renaissance' (Propaganda As Vision: Triumph of the Will, 2003). This propagandist documentary would be a defining platform for future documentaries being made for the sole purpose of total persuasion of an audience. In modern society, this can commonly relate to the dictatorship of Kim Jong Un in North Korea. .
The 1935 documentary Triumph of the Will can be compared to a contemporary documentary from North Korea; 'the present day Nazi dictatorship'. The documentary "Pyongyang Diaries" (1998) directed by Australian Solrun Hoaas documents the aftermath of the death of the North Korean 'Great Leader', Kim II Sung. Although not a propaganda source itself, within the film it shows the propagandist dictatorship of the country's late leader.
