From the Perspective of the Iyi

At the conclusion of the first scene, the armor is seen in a large room, intact, honorable, and surrounded by opulence, the way the Iyi wants it, and by extension, themselves, to be seen. However, despite its opulence, the armor is sequestered in a secret room in a large mansion, and is thus hidden from public view, suggesting that its purpose is not to impress honor through extravagance, but to remind the Iyi retainers that they are indeed honorable samurai, and to present themselves as such. If the clan was ever to be dishonored in any way, the shogun's punishments would cripple the clan, leaving hundreds of honorable samurai to become penniless Ronin. .
The first scene presents those of the Iyi as honorable samurai. However, the music in this scene foreshadows the impending misfortunes of the Iyi. In contrast to the honor and regality presented by the camera, the music is turbulent and foreboding, with crescendos and decrescendos occurring without any temporal guidelines. The melody features the melodic strumming of the biwa followed by some sort of percussion instrument, adding an air of ominousness to a seemingly innocuous scene. The misfortune foreshadowed by the music begins as soon as soon as Motome walks through the doors of the Iyi mansion. Motome claims that he is a penniless ronin who would rather commit seppuku than continue living his life of shame. Aware of his true intentions, the Iyi were placed in a situation with few options. They could either allow him to commit seppuku in their courtyard and take a hit to their honor, or give him the money he wants and risk hundreds of copycats flooding to their mansion. Seeing a slight blow to their honor as the lesser of two evils, the Iyi decide to allow Motome to commit seppuku, hoping that his death would deter other samurai from following in his footsteps. That both the Iyi and Motome are honorable samurai is reaffirmed in in this scene.
