Breath Alcohol Technology - Ignition Interlock

Drunk driving is a lethal daily occurrence in the United States. When people leave a bar, party, or social outing in which they have had too much to drink, many do not call a taxi or have a designated driver and end up making the foolish choice to drive intoxicated. If the drunk driver is caught, they will receive a driving under the influence (DUI) ticket or worse, be involved in an accident which could result in serious injury or death. It is disappointing and alarming that our country has such high rates of drunk driving. But, there is an option available that will decrease the negative impact of intoxicated drivers. Ignition Interlock is a device that prevents individuals from starting their cars unless they blow into a Breathalyzer. This device ensures that unless you are under the legal driving limit of .08, you will not be able to drive. All motorized vehicles in the United States should have Ignition Interlock Breathalyzer systems in them to abolish drunk driving and its negative consequences from economic costs to fatalities.
Ignition Interlock devices are currently being put to use in 150,000 cars in the United States. But, the only people with Interlock in their cars are drivers convicted of multiple DUI's. The courts use Interlock to keep a running log of the driving activity of the convicted DUI recipients so accurate reports can be delivered to the court appointed monitoring officers. It is a great way to keep those multiple offenders off the road, but those people that get away with drunk driving are still a threat although they may get caught. An average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before his or her first arrest. If Ignition Interlock systems were placed in all cars there would be significantly fewer amounts of drunk drivers on the road. There could come a time where driving under the influence of alcohol would be abolished. Ignition Interlock utilizes a combination of technology found in Breathalyzer devices and car alarms.
