Steel Magnolias

In the movie Steel Magnolias it has many different relationships have been affected or influenced by Shelby's diabetes. Her family has always been there for her. She is her mom's little girl and she is protected by her brothers and her dad. I think that this brings her family closer together because they have to work together sometimes to keep her alive. They all know what will happen to her if she looses her sugar intake. In Truby's salon she has a break down and if it were not for her mom she would have been in big trouble. That then leads into the social aspects of her diabetes. Each one of her close friends knows what is wrong with her. They have known Shelby for years and understand her situation. I think that this brings them closer together because they all have to understand how it works just in case they have to help her out. Clarice is a good example of this, she knows exactly what to do and goes and gets the juice for Shelby. The town is a very close-nit town and it brings the family closer with their friends, because of her illness. I think that Shelby has come to the realization of her diabetes and she still does not want to listen to her family members. I think that she down plays the seriousness of it and it later on gets her in trouble. Each person deals with situations differently, so I know that she knows what will happen to her, but this is how she has dealt with it. She doesn't pay attention to it and goes on with her daily life. .
Grief is a different process for each person. Shelby's mom has dealt with this the hardest, I think. I think that she has an enormous guilt and she thinks for a long while why this is happening to her. I think that she gets hostile and starts to blame other people for the death of her daughter. First, I think she blames herself for the death. She feels that she should have gone first and does not think it is far for her grandson to grow up without his mom.
