Short Story - A Genius' Journey

Nickolai squeezed his eyes shut, trying to ignore the high pitched meow of this short and stubby cat, Lucifer. He didn't know what was up with his stupid cat, but he did know that this wasn't his normal behavior. Thinking that Lucifer was just hungry, Nickolai got out of his bed and fed him. No matter how many times Nick shaked the bag of food, Lucifer just stayed in his room and yowled, staring at the ceiling. His fur was puffed up and he wouldn't move; Nick just decided that Lucifer could hear the neighbors dog and it was freaking him out. Lucifer had been a part of Nick's life ever since he was ten years old. That was ten years ago. Now that Nick is twenty years old and lives by himself, his mother told him that either he needed to take Lucifer or she was going to give him to the SPCA. Getting fed up with listening to the constant yowling, Nick decided to go on with his normal Saturday routine. After getting dressed, he left his apartment and made his way across the street to the deli. Sandy's Sandwich Shop sold the best bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits in the whole town. Every Saturday, Nick bought two of those sandwiches and a coffee and sat outside to watch the morning traffic. .
After finishing his meal and having a nice conversation with the lady seated next to him, he politely excused himself and started back home, hoping that his cat was back to normal. Walking up to his door, he could hear that his wishes weren't granted. The yowling of his cat had gotten louder and more high pitched, something that Nick hadn't thought was possible. Saying a silent prayer, he opened his door and went to his room to try to snap his cat out of it. His ear started to ring as he got closer to his room and his stomach gurgled, threatening that it was going to make him puke. He ignored these feelings and thought that he just ate some bad eggs. He finally got to his door and opened it, poised to start yelling at Lucifer for his actions this morning.
